Phase 4

Statistical Analyses

This component of the research paper focuses on the statistical analysis of your hypotheses. Essentially, you are required to use (almost) every statistical technique we cover in this class.

Phase 4a Prep

1. Hypotheses

    -Restate your hypotheses.

            Main:

            Rival 1:

            Rival 2:

-Make sure to specify a direction.

e.g. Main Hypothesis: Women are more likely to be Democrats than are men.

The following is an example of a hypothesis without a direction:

        Main: Gender influences PID.

2. Descriptive Statistics

A. Nominal or ordinal variables

a) Produce a frequency table that pertains to the dependent variable.

b) Produce central tendency (e.g. mode for nominal and median for ordinal variables) and variability (e.g. range for nominal and ordinal variables) measures.

            c) Repeat the above for the independent variables.

B. Interval/ratio variables

a) Produce a histogram that pertains to your dependent variable.

b) Produce central tendency (e.g. mean for interval/ratio and median for skewed variables) and variability (e.g. standard deviation for interval/ratio variables) measures.

            c) Repeat the above for the independent variables.
