| About
the Folio
Most of the works seen in the folio above are politely
stolen from
Paul Rand,
one of the most innovative and influential graphic designers of the 20th
century.
Rand has had a profound influence on the design profession: his pioneering
work in the fields of advertising design and typography has helped elevate
"commercial art" to one of the fine arts. As an art director, teacher, writer
and
design consultant to companies like IBM, UPS and Cummins, among others,
he has had a committed and enthusiastic following, a following which I would
count myself as one. The following examples are the ones that ever so politely
stole. Consider it a tribute to one of the greatest men whoever lived...
"Dancing Cs," Columbus Indiana Visitor's Center (1973), seen on faded
Architectural Tour sign.
"The Graphic
Art of Paul Rand" (1970); originally on cover of children's book, "Sparkle and
Spin" (1956).
"Eye, Bee, M"
poster (1981). IBM in-house event poster for The Golden Circle Award.
"IBM 75"
poster (1989). Rand loved to use logos as confetti, adding wit to the
application.
