Masters in Music Education - Four Summers Option

To further meet the needs of the active public school music educator (and others), Ball State is initiating a four-summer master’s degree program. Accepted students have the option of completing the degree in four summer sessions. Required courses are offered in a rotation that allows for completion of the program during summer sessions only.

Sample Program Sequence
This sequence assumes the following:

  • Theory and History Placement Tests are passed.
    (if not, Review Courses must be taken in addition to the prescribed outline of courses)
  • The Thesis Option (6 credits) for the Final Project.
    Other options are available, but will involve 3-6 additional credit hours in lieu
    of the 6 credit hour thesis project.

  • MUSED 668 - Research in Music Education. (3 credits)
  • 3 credit hours as selected by student. (3 credits)

  • Optional Fall /Spring THES 698 (0-5 credits)

Summer 2009

  • MUSED 620 - Assessment Techniques in Music Education. (3 credits)
  • 3 credit hours as selected by student. (3 credits)

  • Complete THES 698 hours (remaining hours of 6 required). (1-5 credits)

Summer 2010

  • MUSED 610 - Music Teaching and Learning. (3 credits)
  • 3 credit hours as selected by student. (3 credits)

  • MUSED 600 - History & Philosophy of Music Education. (3 credits)
  • 3 credit hours as selected by student. (3 credits)

* Student selects 3 additional credit hours each summer after consulting with the assigned advisor. These credits must meet the remaining MM in Music Education requirements as follows:

1) Supporting Music Courses outside of Music Education. (10 credits)

  • Academic (2-7 credits)
    A minimum of one core theory/history course is required.

  • Applied Music (private study) and/or Ensembles. (3-7 credits)

2) Supporting Elective Courses (may include workshop credit) (2-5 credits)

  • Select from available music workshops and/or music graduate courses. Strongly Recommended: Advanced Methods Course in your specialty area(s) (MUSED 640, 650, 660).
