Master of Music: Concentration
in Music Education
Ball State University has a newly revised Master of Music, concentration
in Music Education degree especially designed for the public school music
educator. The degree offers flexibility to allow students to structure
their program in a manner that best suits their own particular interests
and needs.

Music Education Courses (12 semester hours)
MUSED 600 -- History and Philosophy of Music Education
MUSED 610 -- Music Teaching and Learning
MUSED 620 -- Assessment Techniques in Music Education
MUSED 668 -- Research in Music Education
Supporting Music Courses (10 semester hours outside of music education)
Courses selected from music theory, music history, conducting, arranging,
applied study, ensembles, etc.
Prior to taking course work in history and/or theory, the placement tests
must be passed or the review courses taken.
Academic Courses (minimum of one core theory/history course is required;
see SOM Graduate
Handbook for a listing of core courses) - 2-8 hours
Applied Music and/or Ensembles - 2-8 hours (Note: Conducting is considered
Applied Music)
Supporting Elective Courses (2 - 5 semester hours)
Graduate level course(s) inside and/or outside of music appropriate to
the student's interests and needs. Ball State University workshops may
be used to fulfill these course requirements.
Final Project (3 - 6 semester hours)
Options include a thesis, a creative project, a research paper, or a cognate
of courses in an area of interest to the student.
The three-hour research/project option (RES 697) requires one faculty
advisor; the six-hour project (THES 698) requires a faculty committee
of three.
The cognate option requires six hours of graduate study concentrated in
one area. The emphasis may be in an area of music or in a relevant area
outside of music. A scholarly document that summarizes and synthesizes
the cognate studies, relating them to the student's career goals, is required.
